2016 TMA Awards dinner honours 43 nominees

25th November 2016

2016 saw the highest number of nominees for the TMA Leadership Awards, with 43 TAFE NSW leaders and managers proposed by teams from across Institutes and central units. The awards recognise excellence in leadership and management in teaching, administration and curriculum development. 

TAFE NSW MD Jon Black opened the evening and Chief Education and Training Officer Lucy Arundell gave the keynote sharing her leadership journey and insights.  

Congratulations to our 2016 winners are:

  • Richard Etherington: Head Teacher Commercial Cookery – Northern Sydney Institute
  • Lutfi Hady: Head Teacher Graphic Design – South Western Sydney Institute
  • Natasha Hattersley: Manager Technology for Learning – Northern Sydney Institute
  • Andy Irvine: Chief Education Officer, Civil – North Coast Institute
  • Penny Lees: Head Teacher Community Services – Western Sydney Institute
  • Fiona McQueen: Head Teacher Early Childhood & Education – North Coast Institute

Abby Duruz from the policy team in the corporate office received a ‘Highly Commended’ award.

All nominees received certificates, with the winners also presented with $250 and 12 months membership of the TMA. 

Jon Black wrote in his weekly staff email: 

I was proud to be part of this terrific event to acknowledge and celebrate some of our leaders. I was also very impressed to see some of our Certificate III Commercial Cookery and Hospitality Management students in action at The Apprentice restaurant, led by teachers Jorge Chacon and Linda Larcan. Great job team!

2014 AUSTAFE National Conference - The New TAFE

5th November 2014

The conference took place at the Australian National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour in Sydney. It kicked off with a spectacular cocktail party on the deck of the destroyer HMAS Vampire with Pam Christie, Managing Director TAFE NSW opening the event with brilliant and inspiring speech. The next two days were held in the Lighthouse Gallery with over 120 delegates from NSW and interstate. A range of speakers provided us with tools which we as leaders can use to bring our teams into the new TAFE. Conference presentations are available on the this website's Archive page. Social media - how to do it well

On Tuesday 19 August 2014, TMA and North Coast TAFE co-hosted a Social media - how to do it well workshop in Port Macquarie Campus. Over 60 TAFE colleagues participated via video conference, Adobe connect as well as face to face. Mark Keevers, NC TAFE and Brendon Walker, TAFE NSW Social Media Lead, facilitated the workshop and the technology and responded to social media implementation issues including privacy, permissions, ethical marketing and how to develop an action plan.

At the crossroads - investigating the future of higher level qualifications

Jennifer Raines, Senior Manager, TAFE Initiatives with TAFE Strategy and Finance will talk about a recently published At the crossroads report which contributes to the ongoing discussion around delivering higher level VET qualifications.

The report considers ways to navigate and evaluate opportunities for delivering industry-relevant, financially sustainable and user-preferred programs in higher education. The aim of the document is to initiate and further advance informed conversations in Institutes about the delivery of diplomas, advanced diplomas and degrees in our rapidly changing VET environment. At the Crossroads also provides a course delivery tool which offers a practical means to evaluate opportunities for future course delivery.

New Directions in TAFE: TAFE Connects interview with the Managing Director of TAFE NSW

On Wednesday 26 February 2014, TMA President Russell Scott interviewed Pam Christie, Managing Director of TAFE NSW, for a TAFE Connects webinar. TAFE Connects is a series of weekly online web sessions for TAFE NSW teachers and staff, hosted by the TAFE Learning Services eHub. The interview was based around TMA’s theme for 2014, ‘the new TAFE’, and focused on the direction for TAFE NSW in 2014. The webinar attracted the largest TAFE Connects attendance with approximately 250 TAFE NSW staff representing every Institute.

Ms Christie was very positive about TMA’s 2014 theme and the use of social media and technology for sending constructive messages across all staff:

A key message for our leaders is to be excited about working in TAFE, be positive about our future – that is really an important message to our staff. We don’t want doom and gloom at a time when we are facing competition. We want excitement, we want inspiration. We want to show our customers and our stakeholders, that we are ready for this challenge and we can step up and we can do it.

Webinar participants also asked a range of questions addressing the implementation of Smart and Skilled including how to help individuals make a good training choice, the future of TAFE NSW support services and the Skills List. A follow-up TAFE Connects webinar on ‘Getting Ready for Smart and Skilled’ will be co-presented with TAFE Strategy and Finance on Thursday 13 March 2014.

Many participants were very positive about the interactive nature of the webinar and the opportunity ‘to hear what the MD is thinking’. The Managing Director has agreed to participate in a TAFE Connects interview with TMA each term. 2013 Winners - TMA Leadership Awards

14th November 2013

The TMA Leadership Awards were introduced in 2004 to recognise and promote excellence in leadership and management in teaching, administration or curriculum in TAFE NSW.  On 13 November 2013, Lucy Arundell, R/General Manager TAFE Training and Education Support, and Russell Scott, TMA President and Sydney TAFE St George College Director, presented leadership awards to the following TAFE NSW colleagues:

Carolyn Bax (North Coast Institute) Coordinator, Course Information and Customer Service - was instrumental in designing new processes to offer flexible payment options for students and assisted teaching sections in streamlining application procedures for customers

Diane Cremin (Sydney TAFE) Business Readiness Manager LMBR - demonstrated far reaching leadership by moving TAFE systems and business forward in a time of extraordinary change

Gail Horwood (Training and Education Support Industry Skills Unit, Meadowbank) A/Manager Industry Teams, Community Services and Health - established a pilot program for an e-industry community which now has over 200 teachers as members and contributes to industry currency

Susan Silvester (The Northern Sydney Institute) Marketing Teacher - coordinated the high profile Bachelor of Business Studies program through Charles Sturt University

Karen Alton (Western Sydney Institute - OTEN) Manager Equity and Aboriginal Services - initiated ground breaking new programs such as the Skilled Migrant Internship Program for Accountants and the Spinal Works Program. (Karen was unable to be at the Awards event.)

The celebrations took place at Embark Restaurant, the fully-functioning training restaurant at Sydney TAFE Sutherland College, Loftus Campus.


AUSTAFE 2013 National Conference - Leading beyond the break into oceans of opportunity

The AUSTAFE 2013 National Conference was held at the Gold Coast from 9 to 11 October. Presentations highlighted the need for TAFE to improve:

  5. stronger industry links.

2013 TMA Conference - Empowerment in times of change

The TMA Annual Conference will be held on Friday 7 June at the Sydney Masonic Centre in Goulburn Street, Sydney and will follow the TMA 2013 them of 'empowerment in times of change'. Pam Christie, Managing Director of TAFE NSW will open the Conference. Sessions include:

One year to go - getting ready for an entitlement model

David Williams, Executive Director Victorian TAFE Association, discussed key messages for NSW from other jurisdictions' experiences of operating in a contestable funded model:

  • Setting the strong foundations of quality assurance and compliance of providers is critical.
  • Ensure all TAFE student administration and information systems are fully compliant with the requirements necessary for efficient operation in a contestable market.
  • TAFE needs a fair outcome from the public provider "Base Cost" funding contribution from government that matches the real costs of being a public provider
  • Outstanding customer relations with students, prospective students and employers are essential.
  • Revised commercial focus required from all staff - every $ a TAFE receives is a commercial $, subject to risk in a contestable market.

The NSW Minister of Education, the Hon. Adrian Piccoli MP, opened the TMA event on Tuesday 20 November. He praised Pam Christie in her new role as Managing Director and said she was a strong advocate for TAFE NSW.
Pam Christie provided the keynote address on Transforming TAFE for a New Future. Her main messages were:
·         TAFE NSW Institutes are facing competition on all fronts – universities, private providers, interstate and international providers
·         We can’t be complacent  — we need to think customer focus
·         TAFE NSW has a critical role to build the skills base and support the economy.
A more detailed summary of her address will be available in the next TMA newsletter.
Minister Piccoli and Pam Christie also presented the 2012 TMA leadership awards to:
